To Battle - Public Service Announcement

We have had a lot of rain this summer and as a result I've had very, very little reason to water plants or the like.  What water I needed I could get easily from my almost always full rainbarrel.  About a week ago I had reason to water via the hose.  Really exciting, I know.  Excitement came when I started reeling in the hose when I really got nailed good, right in my bicep, by a big black hornet.  Maybe I've never been stung by one before because this wasn't like anything I've been stung by before.  Within 30-40 seconds this bite REALLY hurt.  Stopped reeling, went in the house, and put some bactine on it.  On the way back to the hose reel I grabbed a can of wasp/hornet spray and soaked the whole hose reel cart.  Went back to reeling the hose in and damn if I didn't get nailed again, in the hand.  Took a swipe at the thing... missed... and went back to reeling only to have the little sucker get me again in the thumb.  Since that time I don't mind admitting that I've been a bit shy about using the hose again.  Well, today I said "No more, damned hornets!" and went to find out where they could possibly be hiding on the thing.  My guess was in the core of the reel.  So, I sprayed the whole cart then unwound the hose, with a can of spray in my hand, sprayed the entire cart again and just kind of watched.  Nothing.  OK, that's cool.  Just as I was going to start reeling the hose in I saw one so I knew they were still there somewhere.  With can in hand I approached looking for anywhere they could be, spraying as I went.  Three cans used up just so you know.  Just as I was about to call it quits I sprayed some into the only hole I could see in the cart.  Voila!  Three of the critters crawled out and I nailed them!  I proceeded to flood the holes, one on each side, spraying maybe 6-8 that crawled out, and I think the battle has been won.  I'll wait an hour or two before reeling the hose back in :)

I thought any nest would be inside the core of the reel.  Didn't see anything in there.  See the little hole where the crosspiece joins the handle?

This hole!  One on each side got a squirt of spray and out they came.  I stood my ground, hardly flinched, and fired away.  Kept going back and forth to each hole then turned the cart upside down as now I could see that this hole allowed access to the hollow handle and I wanted to get some spray dripping inside in that direction.  I'll be putting some duct tape over these holes!

One of the buggers that fell onto the pavers.  The rest fell into the grass as they tried to fly away.  A couple got away but I think I winged them.

So, go check your own hose reel to see if similar holes exist.  I have another one just like this in the front of the house that got the spray treatment.  Nothing came out of it I'm happy to say.  As for the pain of the bite, when I went back in the house I did look around on the internet and found someone saying that WD-40 eased it.  Might be goofy, but it worked... kind of.

Ain't 17 No More...

... or even 31.  It happens.  You get older.  You may not think so but you do.  The saying "You're only as old as you feel" is certainly a good one but after the adventure described below, my feelings aged a bit :)

My son, David, and my daughter-in-law, Samantha, take pretty good care of themselves.  They're both runners and both seem to enjoy just looking for ways to challenge themselves.  A few months ago they found that a nearby college had a confidence course set up.  A confidence course is what used to be called an obstacle course.  They've been to it a few times and have found it fun to challenge themselves on it.  During my last trip over to visit them we all went there together.  Samantha being pregnant observed the activities taking the pictures below.  The pictures are kind of small... click on them to make them bigger.

Note my encouraging grand daughter, Hannah, who stayed with me all the way lending her support.  Okay... let's go!  A straight wall, maybe 8 or 9 feet tall to get over.  Just run, jump onto the wall, grab the top, and pull yourself over, grandpa.  Right.

Ta Da!!  David had already leaped over this thing.  Samantha hates this wall but remains determined to get over it.  In all fairness, she's certainly in shape and her heart is in the right place but her attempts have been hindered thus far by two particular parts of her anatomy.

I'd say that this difficult challenge was the only one that could, in any way, be thought of as fun.  Just so you know, the log rolls perhaps a quarter turn either way, and I think there was a total of three of them in succession that you had to get across.

Here I am demonstrating perfect form as I scamper up this rope-climbing wall.  Perhaps 'scamper' is not the absolutely correct description but at least I didn't fall.

See?  All the way... up and over!

Not as high as the first wall but this one slants toward you.  Another success!

Again slanted, this time rails instead of a solid wall.  Of course David had already flown up and over and now assumes his position of coach.  I must say that when I was doing this I didn't notice the look on David's face.

Up and over!  David is not discouraging Hannah from climbing.  Samantha and David both encourage Hannah to get involved in physical activities.  No... I remember his words being something like "Hannah stay to the side so grandpa doesn't hit you when he falls."

David moving quickly to get over one rail, under the next to the end.

"Three points of contact!" David repeated this direction several times to no avail.  I was trying to maintain as many points of contact as possible so I wouldn't fall off the first rail.  I may have made it to the 2nd rail but certainly no farther.  Again... that look on David's face :)

Without question, my biggest disappointment of the day!  Although near the end of the course I had walked down to this rope climb obstacle first thing.  This is where the "Ain't 17 no more" kicked in big time.  There was a time, some 47 years ago, when I could scamper up a hanging rope hand-over-hand fashion, never needing my feet to grip and leverage the rope.  Well, that was then :)  I got up maybe 3-4 grips when my hands just couldn't take it.

David showed me how to get my feet involved properly first by quickly moving up the rope and then with a static demonstration.  It was good advice but it didn't help.  Really bummed but I shall return!!

Nearing the end of the course David pretty much flew across the monkey bars.

This is when I realized I wasn't 31 (David's age) anymore either!  I think I made it to the 3rd or 4th bar :)  You'll notice in this photo and many preceding that my granddaughter Hannah was right there cheering me on.  Some might have considered it laughing.  I considered it cheering.  Thanks, Hannah!!

Little Sitter

We have had a LOT of rain in good ol' Douglasville the last week but today turned out pretty darn good with lots of sunshine.  It was definitely nice to get outside to just be outside as well as tend to a few things needing tending to.  It was also a 'first' day for me and it had to do with one of my little friends.  I was fixing myself something to eat and could see the hummingbirds coming to the feeders out the windows.  I noticed that one had perched on the feeder, something that I had only seen a couple times before and just for a fleeting moment.  I keep making my lunch... keep looking out the window... and this little sucker keeps sitting.  I glanced at the clock just for the fun of it; it had already been sitting for perhaps 2 minutes.  OK... I'm eating and it's still sitting... now 3 minutes on the clock.  I finish my sandwich and it's still sitting... now 9 minutes on the clock.  Fine... I grab the camera and took a few shots through the window.  Now 12 minutes on the clock.  I figured the thing had died or something -- it wasn't even drinking anymore -- but since it was still there I slowly cracked open the back door thinking I'd get a clearer shot of it but I bumped a chair which made some noise and off it went.  Came in to check... 15 minutes on the clock plus the time prior to me checking.  OK... maybe it doesn't sound all the exciting to you but I kind of enjoyed it :)
My little sitting friend.

New Tab

My daughter-in-law, Samantha, is way ahead of me in her blogging software skills.  A couple of weeks ago, pretty much by accident, I noticed that she had tabs on her blog.  Being the technically adventurous type I sought to do the same.  After a bit of time spent with the 'help' facility here I have made a new tab here for posting my sunset photos.  So, if you're into sunsets as captured by a very amateur photographer who just thinks they are very pretty, take a peek by clicking on the 'Sunsets' tab.
